Sudztown
Sudbury’s Top 10 Conversations
Sudztown is a digital hub and community networking platform designed for the Greater Sudbury area in Ontario, Canada
Launched in 2021, its goal is to act as a community-focused space to foster communication, share local information, and rally community spirit under the slogan “Unity Through Communication” (Comm⋅Unity).
Key Aspects of Sudztown:
The “Top 10” Conversations: A community forum that highlights the most active local discussions categorized under Entertainment, Life, News, and Sports.
Community Hub: It functions as a digital town square, featuring forums that allow residents to discuss local news, sports, life, and entertainment, acting as a curated alternative to mainstream social media.
“Sudbury Interviews” Podcast: Produced by Sudztown and hosted by Dani Star (Canadian Idol, Season 5), this series features 30-minute interviews with ordinary residents, business owners, and community leaders in Sudbury.
Podcast Hub Network: A network of locally created and produced Audio/Video Podcasts showcasing Northern Ontario and Sudbury specifically.
Content & Features: The platform covers local topics, including community events, real estate trends, and local culture, and maintains a “Top 10” list of conversations.
Accessibility: Sudztown is free to use, requiring only an email address to join, and allows users to use their real names or usernames.
Affiliations: The platform is associated with other local resources, such as Sudburyevents.com.
Independent Community Hub: The site explicitly states it is independently owned and has no official affiliation with the City of Greater Sudbury or any level of government.
The site is aimed at encouraging community engagement and highlighting the stories and ideas of people living in the Sudbury area.
Before settling on “Sudztown,” the project was developed under names like Gosudbury, Sudz Social, and Sudbury Square.
Unique Functionality of Top10:
Activity-Based Ranking: The Top10 feed is driven by recent activity, meaning the most active discussions (those with the most frequent new replies) rise to the top.
No Personalization Algorithms: By avoiding algorithms that predict user interest, the feed provides a “neutral” view of what is currently buzzing across the platform, rather than what the system thinks a specific user wants to see.
Natural “Hot Topic” Persistence: Hot topics remain in the Top 10 as long as they receive consistent replies.
“Bump” Functionality: A new reply to an old thread immediately boosts it back into the Top 10, bringing historical or paused discussions back into focus if they are deemed relevant again by users.
Focus on Freshness: Organization is strictly based on the newest activity, promoting a dynamic environment where the “hottest” conversations are those currently being talked about.
Original Concept: The Top10 concept is original to Sudztown and differs significantly from modern social media feeds (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn), which use engagement-based, AI-driven algorithms to rank content based on predicted user engagement, relationship strength, and content type
