The City has begun work to revitalize Memorial Park — the start of an exciting transformation that will breathe new life into this historic community gathering place in Sudbury’s downtown.

Early work this fall includes limbing and pruning trees, restoring turf, installing sod, removing concrete, repairing lock stone and removing flower gardens and picnic tables. Construction fencing will be installed around the work area to preserve the repaired grounds and ensure public safety.

This initial phase of work will focus on the northern part of the park and will take place until mid-November. Work on the southern portion of the park is scheduled for early April (weather permitting) and will be completed by mid-June. It will include more turf restoration and sod installation, the creation of a vendor area, installation of concrete pads and final grounds repairs.

This work is part of the City’s Downtown Action Plan, aimed at advancing downtown revitalization efforts. The plan is built around key pillars, one of which is beautification, and includes work to improve the cleanliness and maintenance of key streets and landmarks.

Memorial Park is located at 188 Brady St., in the heart of the downtown and includes mature trees and gardens, a gazebo, playground, courtyard and water fountain. The park also has significant commemorative and historical aspects, home to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76 cenotaph and other monuments honouring veterans from our community.

Good news as downtown is a reflection of the city , and those travelling through the main road will have a better view.

As someone who works downtown, I am relieved by this announcement as this is normally the homeless hangout, in Memorial Park. It has had a negative impact on the downtown core and some people working daily in the downtown area are avoiding the park, which should be used for a lunch break or walk. I hope it helps?
