City Looking for Community’s Feedback on Next Phase of Outdoor Court Revitalization

In early 2021, the City of Greater Sudbury was successful in its application for Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program funding in the amount of $4,380,000. This funding is supporting the revitalization of 14 outdoor tennis court facilities and 14 outdoor basketball courts across the community over the next several years. The project aims to improve the quality of Greater Sudbury’s recreation and leisure infrastructure and increase usage.

      Work will also include:

      • The conversion of underutilized tennis pads in oversupplied areas, to alternative uses such as pickleball and skateboarding. This will result in a greater variety of recreational activities. Twenty-five to 30 per cent of courts have been identified for conversion.
      • Improved safety and accessibility for users through the rehabilitation/replacement of asphalt surfaces and improved pathways and entrances.
      • Improved playability of outdoor courts through installation of new netting, fencing, basketball standards and other equipment.

Work will be completed in phases. An average of four to five facilities will be scheduled for revitalization during each phase. Work began in the spring of 2022. The entire project is expected to be complete in 2027.

The next phase will include the revitalization of courts at these five locations:

      • McLean Playground basketball court (345 McLean Ave., Sudbury)
      • Queen’s Athletic Sports Complex tennis court (30 Cypress St., Sudbury)
      • Minnow Lake Place basketball court (1127 Bancroft Dr., Sudbury)
      • Capreol Lion’s Den Park multi courts (2 Stull St., Capreol)
      • Wahnapitae Community Centre multi courts (161 Glenbower Cres., Wahnapitae)

Based on existing condition assessments and available 2025 budget, these additional sites will also be included in Phase 3 work:

      • Onaping Tot Lot (Fraser Avenue, Onaping)
      • Lion’s Park (4611 St. Joseph St., Hanmer)

To ensure that facilities are designed to meet the needs of local neighbourhoods and communities, the City is reaching out to residents for feedback. Public consultation sessions will be held at the following locations:

      Wahnapitae Community Centre
      161 Glenbower Cres., Wahnapitae – Monday, April 14 at 6 p.m.

      Onaping Tot Lot
Onaping Community Centre – 2 Hillside Ave., Dowling – Monday, May 5 at 4 p.m.

      Lion’s Park
Howard Armstrong Recreation Centre – 4040 Elmview Dr., Hanmer – Tuesday, May 6 at 4 p.m.

      Capreol Lion’s Den Park
Capreol Millennium Resource Centre – 24 Meehan St., Capreol – Tuesday, May 6 at 4 p.m.

      McLean Playground
McLean Park Fieldhouse – 345 McLean Ave., Sudbury – Wednesday, May 7 at 4 p.m.

Stakeholders such as the Greater Sudbury Pickleball Association, Sudbury Indoor Tennis Club, local basketball clubs, local skateboard enthusiasts, the City’s Seniors Advisory Panel and Accessibility Advisory Panel, Community Action Networks and Neighbourhood Associations will also be engaged.

Asphalt work was recently completed at this location, and the courts are expected to be finalized in 2025:
      • Copper Cliff multi courts (1 Tennis Club Ln., Copper Cliff)

      Sites completed in 2024 include:
      • Kin Park basketball court (2732 Langdon St., Blezard Valley)
      • VLA Playground basketball court (26 O’Neil St., Lively)
